About this build

An emergency light that turns on when the power dies. While a regulated 9V DC wall adapter is plugged in, it trickle charges four NiMH cells through a 150 ohm resistor and keeps the light off. Pull the adapter and three white LEDs light from the battery, for about forty hours.

The switch is one 2N3906 PNP transistor. With the adapter present, a divider holds the transistor's base above the battery voltage, so it stays off. When the adapter dies, the base falls to ground, the transistor saturates and the LEDs come on. Two 1N4001 diodes stop the battery from feeding back into the dead adapter.

It's low voltage DC only: the 9V adapter and four NiMH cells, with no mains voltage anywhere on the board. Each LED has its own 100 ohm resistor, and it all fits on a 15 by 27 perfboard.
